A note from Miriam
Over the past twelve years, I have developed an evolving series of delicately carved wooden feathers. Starting with feather 11,903 – the average number of feathers on a mallard duck – and counting backwards, I have now completed over 30 of these intimate sculptures. “Feathers 11,889, 11,888 & 11,887” was an experiment in carving white oak so thin that the tylosis (outgrowths that block the large pores) broke free to reveal a dramatic texture of porous growth rings. The dense medullary rays of this species project through the growth rings, offering a kind-of woven structure and the ability to shape incredibly thin undulating forms. Shaping the form defines the tools I can use and an order to the process. This order is as flexible and idiosyncratic as the character of the wood in hand.
