Turned and welded patinated bronze rods, fabricated and milled brass, bronze fasteners, American black walnut with hand-rubbed oil finish.
Informed by the story and concept behind this piece, it can be described in the same way both figuratively and literally. I began with raw materials, and turned 140 domed ends on individual bronze rods which I pre-cut to the exact splayed length before welding each of the four main vertical units together. These clusters of domed bronze rods pierce through a slab of American black walnut. Encased in brass sleeves, secured by custom-milled brass cleats, these clusters diverge. As they converge, they change from pure and polished raw material to gradient layers of patina. The patina acts as a protective layer unifying the individual bronze rods as one support system for the console table. The structure of this piece combines precise hand-cut mortises, custom-milled joinery, delicate reveals, trapezoidal American black walnut wedges and domed brass feet—merging rawness and refinement in an unexpected way.
Miriam Carpenter is a contemporary artist and designer based in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. As a Rhode Island School of Design alumna, she began her career designing alongside Mira Nakashima. Through new processes, her work explores things often overlooked—unveiling the hidden complexities around us. Imbued with heart and soul, her action-oriented form of art is a union of traditional technique, ingenuity and talent that is rooted in a conscious effort to create lasting positive change.
