Nerikomi technique. Hand-built, carved and burnished ceramic. The ceramics were made in 2015 – and the container/display was made in 2017. The ceramic “eggs” are displayed on black sand in a wooden bent tray by Carpenter, inspired by the Hakata Magemono tradition in Japan, and arranged in the style of a Zen garden.

Each egg ranges in size from 3.5″ – 1.5″ – 2″ – 1″.

“Origins began in Australia sourcing natural earth pigments, wedging varying gradients into the clay, and creating complex flat canvases of patterning by way of the Japanese technique – Nerikomi. The hollow forms were built in the cups of my hands and blown to inflate. Black sand raked with complete stillness of mind and focus displays these eggs, the germs of creation. Every spring I make time to walk through the woods and admire the ephemerals, and budding new growth.” – Miriam Carpenter
