Arthur Espenet Carpenter – Self-Taught Woodworking Master

Arthur Espenet Carpenter was born in 1920 in New York City. He earned a degree in Economics and English from Dartmouth in 1942, and upon graduation promptly enlisted in the Navy. It was during this service that he begun realizing his desire for a creative career that allowed for self expression, and upon returning home he began experimenting with woodworking and moved to San Francisco.

Espenet Carpenter’s work was featured in Museum of Modern Art’s Good Design Exhibit in 1950. After a considerable rise in his notoriety and acclaim, Arthur Espenet Carpenter was working to meet the public demand and had little time left for creating new designs. Seeking a more peaceful lifestyle, he and his family moved to Bolinas, California, where he continued to create furniture designs that are known and loved globally to this day. Arthur Espenet Carpenter passed away in 2006 after a long and iconic career.
