An exceptional Custom Desk by Mira Nakashima dating to 1998. The desk features a highly figured bookmatched slab of Carpathian Elm Burl with expressive free edges on either side of the desk. Additionally, the desk’s top includes numerous natural voids and pass throughs which highlight the unique natural beauty of the impressive slab. Joining the bookmatched slab sections are four butterfly joints.

Supporting the desk is an architectural base with a central stretcher, angled vertical support, and a cross support on which a case piece sits. The case piece includes three drawers, one of which is a larger file drawer, on the user’s side. The front of the case is open storage with an adjustable shelf.

Mira Shizuko Nakashima was born in Seattle, Washington, incarcerated with her family at Minidoka on the Idaho Desert and moved to New Hope, Pennsylvania in 1943. She attended school in Bucks County, graduated cum laude from Harvard University in 1963, and received a Masters in Architecture from Waseda University, Tokyo, in 1966, where she married one of her classmates. The family then moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania until 1970, when she returned to work as her father’s assistant until his death in 1990.
