Ashley Joseph Martin
Ashley Martin was born and raised in rural southwestern Pennsylvania. During his early years, he spent much of his time exploring the woods, carving found sticks into functional tools and whimsical objects. He attended Ohio University for aviation and meteorology and after graduating worked as a flight instructor for Ohio State University. During this time, he began experimenting with small carving projects and selling at local flea markets and craft shows. As this hobby expanded, he decided to make the leap, leaving his career as a pilot and moving to Asheville NC for a full-time furniture apprenticeship. Over two years, he expanded his knowledge of furniture making and honed his carving techniques. In 2021, Ashley established his own studio in Philadelphia PA to explore his aesthetic vision and add to his repertoire of designs. He now focuses on hand-carved, wooden home goods and furniture that are sculptural, yet functional.
Ashley Martin’s advanced use of texture and form show a deep understanding of the material and clear vision throughout his work. He effortlessly sculpts curves and makes thousands of small carving marks which play with light and reveal depths of the wood grain not commonly found with a smooth finish. The thorough application of small details in his joinery, carving, and handles, makes each piece hold depth far beyond what is initially seen or felt. His work exists as a testament to the beauty of carved wood and offers function which encourages interaction and use on a daily basis.
