Moderne Gallery’s exhibition at DESIGN MIAMI (Booth G19) reflects the spirit of shokunin – the Japanese ideal of mastery through humility, patience, and respect for material.
In this meeting of traditions, innovation means deepening the line rather than breaking it. Our presentation stages a dialogue between Japanese and American methodologies and philosophies via artists who pursue expression by way of pure devotion to their craft. Iconic works by George Nakashima ground the exhibition in a philosophy which honors the spirit of the natural world and maker. In particular, Moderne Gallery is proud to present historic masterworks by Nakashima which articulate his spiritual, nature-driven design approach.
Additionally, new work by Harumi Nakashima reveals ceramic form as rhythmic evocations of systems of balance and tension. Simultaneously, Yuji Ueda’s anagama-fired works bring force, an embrace of chance and imperfection, and tactility. At the center of our booth is a breathtaking coffee table by contemporary American woodworker Miriam Carpenter which translates material intelligence into a biomorphic, resonant form.
