Born on the 21st of September, 1910, Umberto Mastroianni was a beacon of inspiration in the small town of Fontana Liri, located in the province of Frosinone. His artistic journey started at Rome’s illustrious Accademia di San Marcello, before a family relocation brought him to Turin, where he further refined his talents under the watchful eye of maestro Guerrisi.

As the 20th century’s latter half unfolded, Mastroianni emerged as a prominent figure in European modernism. His impactful voice echoed through the continent, resonating from countless exhibitions. These reverberations reached across the globe as international recognition followed, adorning his illustrious career with numerous accolades.

His early pieces carried a distinct futurist flair, reflecting the considerable influence of Boccioni’s works. Mastroianni, however, integrated a touch of neo-cubism, giving his creations a distinctive appeal.

In 1947, Mastroianni’s pioneering spirit led to the inception of the Turin Prize, firmly imprinting his mark on the art scene. His laurels included prestigious awards like the International Grand Prize for Sculpture at the 1958 Venice Biennale and the 1989 Tokyo Imperial Prize.

In 1993, a few years before his passing, the artist’s indelible contribution to modernism was immortalized with the establishment of the Fondazione Umberto Mastroianni in Arpino, a stone’s throw away from his birthplace.

His final curtain fell on February 25, 1998, in his house in Marino, Rome. A well-respected figure worldwide, Mastroianni left a treasure trove of artistic masterpieces that would continue to inspire future generations.
