Shiitake mushrooms are traditionally used in Chinese and other Eastern medicine practices, revered for their renowned healing properties. In this piece, Zein Daouk explores the concept of the organic vessel and the light held within, which emanates a healing glow and vibrancy encased in its animate form.
This piece highlights Zein Daouk’s meticulous sculpting process, a craftsmanship that allows her to capture even the most delicate forms and complex features in stoneware. Its unique shape and color, inspired by nature, are formed from stoneware with a matte roseum pink lava glaze.

The Shining Shiitake series examines the myriad of shapes and sizes and colours and species and lifestyles seen in the mushroom realm. It reveals the magical narrative between purpose and artwork. The works draw from the potent healing powers of the Shiitake and emanate their glow to nurture symbiotic relationships. The unique objects that grow from this experiment become functional sculptures that trigger an adventure into light and landscape. Always playful, colourful and perky these Luminaires bring morsels of the rich forest woodlands to uplift the quotidian.
About Zein Daouk: Inspired By Nature and Healing
Beirut-based artist Zein Daouk is a multidisciplinary architect with an intense passion for ceramics and a commitment to ongoing learning and curiosity. She first began her journey working with clay in 1999, but only in 2020 did clay become her main medium– her “voice”. At that time, Zein Daouk began pursuing ceramics professionally.
Zein Daouk’s work portrays a dialogue between disciplines and elevates the fluid narrative between functionality and pure sculptural design through work with the four elements; “water stretches shapes into earth, air commits them to form and fire becomes the founding act that brings them to life.”
Her vision takes shape in biomorphic forms that stretch the boundaries of the sculptural, inviting audiences to discover “a mysterious new species of functional art objects.”
Zein Daouk is celebrated for her experimental works that explore the healing powers of the organic world and the connection between function, form, and how these concepts relate to the symbiosis of man and nature. Though her pieces may look robust, one must encounter them in person to truly capture their fragility and, like the fungi that inspires them, the lightness of their form.

Her work embraces the dialogue that links disciplines by highlighting the fluid narrative between function & sculpture. She explores form by working with the four Elements; flowing Water stretches shapes into the Earth, Air commits them to form & Fire becomes the founding act that brings them to life. A harmonious combination of biomorphic forms emerge & push the sculptural vocabulary until the form becomes something mysterious & new. These objects are playful and organic and come in joyous hues created by a time-consuming process of layering and firing multiple colors , but when encountered in person, it is their surprising fragility that stands out. Formed from a combination of hand building, slab work, coiling and wheel throwing, each one turns out, like the fungi they are based on, to be as light as air. At the essence of her craft lies an insatiable curiosity to learn.
