about The Third Kingdom

The Third Kingdom is a kind and happy realm that nurtures cooperation and symbiotic relationships. The works very much reside in contemporary ceramics while rooting themselves in expressionism with its emotive color palette. But most of all they stay true to my architectural background. I don’t see myself as a ceramicist but more as an architect and a builder and a story teller working with clay as my current medium of choice. Although the vessels seem to have a function, they are essentially sculptural. I have never been able to see them as anything but stand-alone beings. Each has a name according to its shape, color and size and each one has a personality. They truly became my companions this past year and helped me heal from all the madness around us.

Under every footstep that we take all over the planet lies a hidden Kingdom, a single interconnected realm ruled by the Mighty Mycelium. It is a world full of magic and mystery, an intertwined network that flourishes under the earth. This World Wood Web holds the power of nature’s bond to all living things. It does not move but it is not Flora, it feeds on other organisms but it is not Fauna.

It is a Kingdom of its own: THE THIRD KINGDOM, and it bears fruit: beautiful FUNGI.

FUNGI come in a myriad of shapes and sizes and colors and species and lifestyles. They are a window into the hidden landscape under our feet: an ancient land of determined lifeforms, silent yet sentient.
They shape our world and hold the key to our future. Some save us, some threaten us and most we haven’t even met.
They bring life,
They sustain life,
They transform life.
They are the changers.
They are the true masters of survival.
They are the ecosystem communicators in a symbiotic pulse of infinite mindfulness.

Let them be seen… Let them be heard… Let them be celebrated.
Let them shift our consciousness towards a better tomorrow.

Based in Beirut, Zein Daouk is a multidisciplinary architect with an obsession for creating & a passion for ceramics. Her work embraces the dialogue that links disciplines by highlighting the fluid narrative between function & sculpture. She explores form by working with the four Elements; flowing Water stretches shapes into the Earth, Air commits them to form & Fire becomes the founding act that brings them to life.  A harmonious combination of biomorphic forms emerge & push the sculptural vocabulary until the form becomes something mysterious & new.  These objects are playful and organic and come in joyous hues created by a time-consuming process of layering and firing multiple colors , but when encountered in person, it is their surprising fragility that stands out. Formed from a combination of hand building, slab work, coiling and wheel throwing, each one turns out, like the fungi they are based on, to be as light as air. At the essence of her craft lies an insatiable curiosity to learn.
