Material: Stoneware with volcanic glaze.

One of Halper’s larger works. Traditional forms of Halper’s work were made from stoneware clay; sculptural works were made from stoneware infused with grog. Her firing process involved the use of an electric kiln and all works were fired to cone 10. She created her surface using a volcanic formula that she developed.

Halper initially took ceramic classes at Greenwich House Pottery in Manhattan in the early 1940’s, when she and her husband, Louis, lived on University Place in Greenwich Village. Prior to that she was an expert seamstress/embroiderer and taught sewing classes at the Singer Sewing Company in New York.
