An excellent example of American studio furniture design blending geometry, craftsmanship, and visual rhythm.
This remarkable *Music Stand* by American studio furniture artist William Keyser exemplifies his masterful balance of utility, structure, and sculptural elegance. Made in 1986, the stand was designed during Keyser’s influential tenure at the School for American Crafts at RIT, where he led the Furniture Design program from 1962 to 1997.
The piece is a celebration of Keyser’s distinct aesthetic: modernist geometry executed with precision joinery and lyrical form. The radial configuration of ash spindles against the dark wenge framework is both functional and formally expressive, evoking musical rhythm through structure and shadow.
Crafted from contrasting Wenge and Ash, this music stand demonstrates Keyser’s interest in both material dynamics and visual harmony. The slender tripod base supports a cantilevered shelf and semicircular frame, within which ash spindles radiate outward in a visually striking pattern.
Keyser’s use of negative space, structural daring, and architectural precision reflects a deeply considered design process rooted in both function and aesthetic experimentation. As with much of his furniture, this piece invites appreciation from multiple angles, bridging the boundaries between craft, sculpture, and fine design.
William Keyser (b. 1936) is a seminal figure in the American Studio Craft Movement. He taught at the School for American Crafts at RIT for over three decades, mentoring generations of studio furniture makers, industrial designers, and educators. His work—recognized by a National Endowment for the Arts Craftsman’s Fellowship and The Furniture Society’s Award of Distinction—resides in prominent collections and continues to influence makers today.
He has been named a Fellow of the American Craft Council and is a Distinguished Alumnus of both Carnegie Mellon University and Rochester Institute of Technology. Keyser currently maintains a studio in Victor, NY, where he creates sculptural furniture, paintings, and objects that reflect his lifelong engagement with form, material, and innovation.
This music stand is a rare, masterful example of Keyser’s design ethos—ideal for collectors of American studio furniture, modernist wood design, and sculptural objects from the late 20th century.
