Hans Wegner’s “The Chair” is an iconic piece of Danish design that exemplifies the ethos of mid-century modern furniture. Also known as the “Round Chair” or simply “Chair”.

The Chair was designed in 1949 and introduced to the public at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Furniture Exhibition. It is made of solid wood (commonly teak or oak) and features a rounded top rail and beautifully woven cane or upholstered seat. One of its defining characteristics is its curved back rest that seamlessly combines form and function. The Chair is well-known for its organic, minimalist design and incredible attention to detail.

The Chair gained fame in the United States when it was used in the 1960 televised presidential debates between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy. After this exposure, it became extremely popular and was often referred to as “The Kennedy Chair”.

Wegner’s work, including The Chair, helped define the Danish Modern style that became popular globally in the 1950s and 60s. His designs emphasized function, beauty, and the use of natural materials, with a strong attention to detail and craftsmanship.
