These Askel Bender Madsen wingback chairs feature sloping, curved arms crafted from teak and upholstery cushions in an iconic wingback silhouette. The works of Danish designer Aksel Bender Madsen can be distinguished by their fine craftsmanship, honed since the 1940s and displayed throughout collections of his one-of-a-kind sculptural chair designs. In addition to sculptural chairs, Askel Bender Madsen designed living rooms, bedrooms, shelving, dining tables, and office furniture
This set of wingback chairs is a testament to the enduring vision of Aksel Bender Madsen, who, in tandem with partner since 1947 Ejner Larsen, crafted clear, timeless, simple staples which continue to please the eye today. In addition to their beauty, this pair of Aksel Bender Madsen Bovenkamp Wingback Armchairs hold high historical value as a well-preserved piece of Madsen’s legacy that melds form and function. This stylistic functionality honors Madsen’s roots working with famed architects Kaare Klint and Arne Jacobsen, after his graduation from the Furniture School at Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1940, until 1943
In his own words: “What Ejner Larsen and I have made has always been in line with the principles we learnt from Kaare Klint about what is functional and what is natural. The requirements made set the design.”
Starting 1942, Aksel Bender Madsen designed his own cabinet models which he exhibited at the annual Cabinetmakers Guild’s exhibitions in Copenhagen. While studying at the Academy, he met Ejner Larsen, and in 1947, they established a design studio together. The same year, they presented works made by cabinetmaker Willy Beck at the Cabinetmakers Guild’s exhibition in Copenhagen where they continued to participate year after year, working with Beck for a total of 25 years. In addition to sculptural chair designs, they also designed living rooms, bedrooms, shelving, dining tables, and office furniture. Their most notable work is the famous Metropolitan Chair, in bent plywood, which was exhibited in 1949 and manufactured by Fritz Hansen from 1952.
