Halper’s Technique

Halper utilized stoneware clay with added grog, firing her pieces to cone 10 in an electric kiln. She developed specialized volcanic glaze formulas to achieve highly textured surfaces, contributing to the distinctive aesthetic of her work.

Background

In the early 1940s, Halper began her ceramic studies at Greenwich House Pottery in Manhattan. Prior to her ceramics career, she was an expert seamstress and embroiderer, teaching at the Singer Sewing Company in New York.

Halper initially took ceramic classes at Greenwich House Pottery in Manhattan in the early 1940’s, when she and her husband, Louis, lived on University Place in Greenwich Village. Prior to that she was an expert seamstress/embroiderer and taught sewing classes at the Singer Sewing Company in New York.
