George Nakashima
Conoid Chest, 1962

Dimensions:
36 × 14 × 36 in (W x D x H)
91.44 x 35.56 x 91.44 cm

This cabinet features an East Indian Laurel case and pulls, beautifully paired with a holly front.

First introduced in the 1961 Nakashima catalogue, the Conoid line was inspired by the lyrical space of the Conoid Studio. This particular cabinet was a custom order for an important Philadelphia family. Nakashima’s original Conoid cabinet was designed as a hi-fi cabinet and only offered in the 1961 catalogue. He customized it for this client, likely making it the only Conoid Cabinet not made for hi-fi equipment. As a beautiful one-off, it’s a true piece of design history.

George Nakashima was born in Spokane, Washington in 1905 to Japanese parents who had immigrated to the United States. Educated and trained as an architect at the University of Washington, Nakashima received his Master’s degree in Architecture from M.I.T. in 1930. After working briefly as an architect in the United States he left for Paris seeking the creative energies of one of the great urban centers of the day. From there he traveled extensively, ending up at the home of his grandmother, living on a farm on the outskirts of Tokyo.
