Janice Smith
“Origami” Couch, 1996

Dimensions:
98 × 33 × 31 in (W x D x H)
248.92 x 83.82 x 78.74 cm

Material: birch and birch plywood with “Italo Pearl” composite veneer. Fabric design by Cynthia Schira, woven on a computerized loom in Germany for this couch.

Finish: The origami couch is hand finished with 5 coats of Platina shellac, the palest shellac produced.

Platina will not yellow with age and is forever repairable. Shellac is a non toxic, sustainable natural finish refined from an insect secretion. It has been found on furniture in King Tut’s tomb.
This particular Platina is refined from a raw shellac called Kusmi, which is produced in India. Kusmi is considered to be one of the finest shellac resins in existence.
