Crafted from reclaimed redwood and glass, Ashoke Chhabra’s Prototype Cubist Table Lamp won 1st place at the Wharton Esherick Museum’s 26th Annual Juried Woodworking Exhibition, Leave a Light On. Chhabra, based in Tujunga, CA, designed the lamp with angular rows of redwood and glass that rise in a captivating, chaotic rhythm. This exhibition, which opened on September 8th 2020 alongside the Museum’s Annual Members Party, celebrates 13 artists from across the country whose inventive approaches to lighting demonstrate the future of woodworking artistry and craftsmanship.
Reflecting on his creative journey, Chhabra shares: “My creative process is non-linear, marked by failures, happy accidents, and modest victories. Occasionally, an idea ignites that redefines future efforts. This work is part of my Chaos Series, named for its initial disjointed appearance. Yet, there’s a repeating pattern—a balance between dissonance and harmony—that creates its unique visual appeal.”
