A Turned Leg Dining Table with Extensions by George Nakashima. Crafted from Cherry, the table features a dramatically figured top as well as three contrasting Rosewood butterflies joining the work’s top sections.

Reflecting upon his signature butterfly joints, Nakashima noted: “[They add] strength to the joinery and, just as important, it adds a creative design element. Where it is placed, its size, color and texture are all vital considerations. The butterflies should contrast with the boards, matched for attractiveness. Their grains should be perpendicular to each other for strength” (’The Soul of a Tree’, George Nakashima, 1981, p.133).

The table can also be fitted with two 14 inch extension leaves which are inserted on the table’s ends for an additional 28 inches of length.

After working briefly as an architect in the United States he left for Paris seeking the creative energies of one of the great urban centers of the day. From there he traveled extensively, ending up at the home of his grandmother, living on a farm on the outskirts of Tokyo.
