Opening Exhibition | 1705

Marking a new chapter in the storied, 40 plus year history of Moderne Gallery, we are proud to debut our new gallery space. Established in 1984, Moderne Gallery has always been on the leading edge of discoveries and trends in the market for the finest works from the Studio Movement. Forward thinking, innovation, education, and an eye for fine work have built the gallery’s reputation as a pioneer in the world of art and design.

In 1985, one year after opening, Moderne Gallery was the first gallery to present George Nakashima’s work on the secondary market and largely contributed to building global recognition for his craft and spirit. Over the years, the gallery has passionately represented Nakashima’s continued legacy working closely with and exhibiting the work of Mira Nakashima, supporting academic research, archival projects, and ongoing collaborations and partnerships.

Today, the gallery houses the largest and finest collection of George Nakashima’s 1940s -1980s designs and is known as the premiere gallery for Nakashima’s work.

Additionally, Moderne Gallery is renowned as the primary gallery specializing in Studio Craft. Also, the gallery is known internationally for the showcase of important historic and contemporary studio ceramics, turned wood, and metalwork.

Over our four decade plus history, Moderne Gallery has ceaselessly championed artistry and craftsmanship while supporting and interacting with a local and international community of artists, designers, collectors, and beyond.

Our new space will further our legacy by featuring inspiring exhibitions, highlighting creative experiences, and supporting our continued dedication to unique works of art and design. Additionally, the location will allow us to advance the artists we represent, while immersing ourselves in community-building, welcoming friends new and old into the world of art and design through our unique lens.

Since our founding, we have always called Philadelphia home. Now, we are honored to join the burgeoning North American Street Arts Corridor and to continue to be a part of the city’s vibrant, diverse arts community for many years to come.
